Post-MVA Recovery: What to Expect After a Manual Vacuum Aspiration

Question
5 days ago I had an MVA (Manual Vacuum Aspiration) abortion.  I have not had any cramping (except for the first 20 minutes after the procedure) or bleeding.  I have had minor spotting, not even enough to wear a pad (I just notice some colour when I wipe after going to the washroom).  Is this normal?  Am I not supposed to bleed even a little?  I thought I would get something like a menstrual cycle after having this procedure, so I just want to make sure it's normal NOT to bleed...

Answer
Dear Laurel,
It is completely normal not to bleed after a MVA.  During the procedure, the lining of the uterus, similar to a period, is gently removed and many women have light or no bleeding after.  It is also not unusual to bleed or spot a few days after the procedure.  Either way it it normal. Your next period will usually come in 4-6 weeks after your procedure if you are not using birth control.  Doctor Joan
