Irregular Periods After Plan B: Possible Pregnancy?

Question
my period is usually regular but last month i got my period twice.after that ihad unprotected sex so i got the plan b pill. about a week later i began to spot. i know that the side effects of the pill are irregular periods, but i haven't had my period at all this month! could i be pregnant? the hoe pregnancy test read negative.

Answer
Dear Nycia,

More than likely the delay in your period this cycle is due to the emergency contraception. At the time of expected menses, approximately 75% of women using Plan B had vaginal bleeding similar to their normal menses, 12-13% bled more than usual, and 12% bled less than usual. The majority of women (87%) had their next menstrual period at the expected time or within +/- 7 days, while 13% had a delay of more than 7 days beyond the anticipated onset of menses. However, if there is a delay in the onset of menses beyond 1 week, the possibility of pregnancy should be considered.

If you do not have a regular period in the next couple of weeks, you should re-test just to be sure. When you test, make sure you are using 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results. If the next test is also negative, I would simply wait to see what the next cycle brings. Sometimes the emergency contraception (Plan B) can alter your cycles for at least the first one.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
