Jewelry Appraisal: Sapphire & Diamond Rings - Are They Real?

Question
I recently bought a lot of jewelry at a friends estate sale. There are several rings. One in particular, she told me the stones were sapphire and a cluster of 6 sm diamonds each side of stone. They are prong set in a nice mounting. The ring is marked 18KGE. Gold electro plate? Could the stones be genuine? Another one, possibly ruby no diamonds is marked 10K  SR. Possibly genuine? Can you estimate values? Thank you. Bonnie

Answer
HI BONNIE,

I BELIEVE YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE GOLD ELECTROPLATE, MORE THAN LIKELY THE STONES ARE NOT GENUINE.THE ONE STAMPED 10K IS POSSIBLY REAL AND NO WAY OF TELLING WHAT KIND OF STONE IT IS. I CAN'T REALLY GUESS WHAT THEIR VALUES MIGHT BE WITHOUT SEEING THEM IN PERSON. THEY COULD RUN FROM $2 TO $200, I REALLY HATE TO SPECULATE. I WOULD THINK THEY ARE NOT WORTH A WHOLE LOT BUT I COULD BE WRONG. TRY TO HAVE A JEWELER TAKE A QUICK LOOK AND SEE IF THEY ARE REAL.

GOOD LUCK

PETER
