Long-Lasting Short Manicures: Fiberglass & Silk Options

Question
I'm wondering if there is a way to get a good, lasting manicure that upon leaving the salon, my nails are short-- ie. maybe it's silk, fiberglass, or other-- (seeing as how gel seems to need to be at least a certain length?) --that will allow the technician to leave just a small amount of nail past the fingertip?-say a millimeter? (I don't like long nails, but I like manicures, and I like the long lasting wear of gel.)

Question -
My natural nails are weak, and I tend to bite them unless they are manicured.  I've done gel nails for 2 years now, that helped with the biting, but the shortest they can be when I leave the salon is about the longest I want them, so 3 weeks later, when they've grown out, they become way too long... any suggestions?

Hi Heather!

I'm thinking that perhaps I'm missunderstanding your question.
Are you asking me how to keep them the same length they are when you leave the salon? If that indeed is your question, then all you need to do is file them shorter.
Nails continue to grow.  So, they will always need filing.
Please let me know if there's anything I've missunderstood or if you need further assistance.
Best regards
Victoria

Answer
Hi Heather,

Thanks!  I indeed misunderstood your question, and thank you for clarifying.
Any enhancement system: whether fiberglass/silk/linen wraps, or dips, or Liquid and powder acrylic or uv gel MUST have a certain amount of free edge available to 'cap' it (which in a sense means wrapping the product around the free edge as a fitted sheet would wrap a mattress).
I would not recommend any shorter than these  http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b265/OnglesChezVictoria/French%20Mani%20-%20Na for initial application as capping the free edge would be near impossible.

Also, it's not wise to lets enhancements go longer than 3wks between fills for the average person.  Most should have their refills every 2wks due to the rate of growth of their nails. Only those rare cases that grow very slowly can go as long as 4 or 4.  Any enhancement that has grown out and is older than 2-3wks is at risk for breakage because they are unbalanced and therefor weak. Also, they are at risk for the product lifting away from the natural nail which allows water in and may cause 'greenies' (fungus infection).  So if they are too long at that point, then they are growing at an average rate and you should make an appointment for a refill/rebalance.

I hope this helps
