Selling Large Gemstones: Finding Reputable Gem Brokers

Question
Hi Peter,

I have three very large gemstones:  648.25 carat ruby, 273.40 carat emerald, and a 815.05 carat emerald.  They have been authenicated as being genuine.  Are there a list of gem brokers who would sell these for me for a commission?

Answer
Hi Ann,

Are these gems cut and polished or rough? Do you have appraisals on them? Where did you buy them? All these factors determine value and if they are salable and what market are they for. There are many gems that are genuine & natural but are not "gem" quality. There are hundreds of brokers including myself that sell on consignment but what you expect may be different than what they can sell for. I have sold many very large gems for a little and for a lot, an appraisal is absolutely necessary in most cases. Where are these gems at?
