Identifying & Valuing Raw Gems: A Guide for Beginners

Question
Hi there... My family and I just got back from the Emerald Mine in North Carolina.. while there we found numerous gems, my question is how do we know if they are worth anything and how to tell them apart. We bought a gemstone book and some we can tell but others we just can't. The lady there told me I had several Sapphires, and a Silver Topaz... I have never heard of the Silver Topaz. Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated.  Shannon

Answer
hello Shannon....
sounds like you had a mother lode....
what you need to do is to find a good gemologist..
that is exactly what they do...
I would also recommend it gemological Institute of America GIA
they are located in Carlsbad California... I would simply give them a call and ask for any gemologist they recommend in your area..
also they may accept stones mailed to them for analysis..
I know they accept diamonds..
