Identifying Ring Stamps: Understanding 'STER' and Diamond Marks
QuestionI found a ring in the shape of a flower. On the inside of the band, it has a stamp. The first part of the stamp is the shape of a diamond and the second part says STER which I would think means sterling. It has a gold layer on it so it might be electroplate maybe? It has a clear center stone, and 5 other stones which are red like garnet. I'm wondering what the diamond stamp means. If you cannot answer I understand, but if you could send me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
AnswerHI GENEVA,
YOU ARE RIGHT IT IS PROBABLY STERLING SILVER. THE DIAMOND STAMP HAS NO REAL MEANING AND IS PROBABLY A MANUFACTURERES INSERT. YOU MIGHT WANT A GEMOLOGISTS OPINION ON THE STONES TO SEE IF THEY ARE OF ANY VALUE. TO FIND OUT MORE YOU MIGHT TRY YOUR LIBRARY AND LOOK FOR A BOOK THAT HAS A HISTORY AND RECORD OF HALLMARKS. THIS MIGHT SHED SOME LIGHT ON THE USE OF THE DIAMOND. IN ANY CASE IT IS ALWAYS EXITING RESEARCHING HALLMARKS AND STANDARDS. GOOD LUCK.
