Identifying Antique Purse Hardware: Silver vs. Base Metal - Appraisal & Testing

hi, i have some very old antique beaded purses/handbags that have very ornate silver colored metal handles and trims.  none of them are marked, but look like they could be silver or platinum.  do you know if they used precious metals for this type of item in the 1800s or early 1900s?  also, i would like to purchase a simple testing method for metals; do you know of one?  thanks so much for your help!
