Identifying a Ring: What Does the Number 526 Mean?

Question
I recently found a ring and a band on the ground and was wondering if they might be real or fake. I looked on the inside for an inscription number but all there is is the number 526... what does this mean?

Answer
Hello Mel and thank you for your inquiry. The 526 on the ring might be a design or manufacturer number. Usually gold with have a karat mark i.e. 14k, 18k, etc. Silver will have the number 925 or sterling. In order to veryify the content you would need to have it professionally tested by a jeweler or gemologist.  Your local library, museum or antique shop can probably refer you to a qualified individual.  Hope this helps and good luck !
