QuestionI found a 10k gold ring with what I think is a diamond. I checked the diamond with a line on a white piece of paper and was unable to see the line. Inside the ring it has a diamond symbol with a 70 next to it. What does that mean?
AnswerDear David,
As I state in the instructions box, I do not attempt to answer questions of trademarks of manufacturers. However, I realize most folks are not in the jewelry business beyond owning and enjoying some of it. What marks are trade marks and what might identify the metal or other character of the jewelry can be misunderstood and confusing.
A mark shaped like a diamond and a number are certainly suggestive of what is in the ring but this is not how rings are quality marked. I suspect these marks have only to do with the maker and perhaps a style number or similar id. As for diamond weights stamped inside a ring, a few makers selling lower priced jewelry to large chain stores and department stores do mark the rings inside. I suspect this is as much an aid to the sales people as any thing else. Certainly, once a ring is out and being worn, so many things can happen in damage or stone losses, stones replaced, etc., that such markings inside a ring have little value and convey little proof.
As for the drawn line test, a CZ will let the line show in most cases but there are colorless(or almost colorless) gemstones which can make a good diamond simulation which will pass the test. The test is not reliable if used alone.
The best test is to have a jeweler take a look and tell you what you truly have there. Fair enough?
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
