Is Your 14K Gold Jewelry Real? Understanding Gold Plating & Nickel Allergies

Question
CAN A RING BE STAMPED 14K IF IS ONLY GOLD PLATED.  A RING THAT I PURCHASED IS STAMPED 14K AND IT DOES LOOK REAL, BUT AFTER WEARING IT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS MY FINGER HAS NOW GOT SOME SORT OF RASH WHERE MY RING IS.  I ALSO HAD TO HAVE IT RESIZED AND THE BAND THEY PUT IN IT I WAS TOLD WAS 14K AS WELL.  I HAVE HEARD SOME PEOPLE SAY THESE FILLER BANDS ARE NEVER 14K AND THAT WHITE GOLD HAS A HIGH COUNT OF NICKEL IN IT.  DO YOU HAVE ANY EXPLANATION OR ARE THESE OTHER THINGS TRUE.  DO YOU ALSO KNOW OF ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE.  I HEARD YOUR DIET HAS A LOT TO DO WITH HOW NICKEL CAN AFFECT YOU.
THANK YOU

Answer
G'day Lynne and many thanks for your query.

Two points to your question and the first one is 'Yes' an item can be stamped with anything - including the 14k mark - even if it is not real. This is because there are a lot of imitation items out there and as they are made in South East Asia or China - they don't have to comply (unwilling) to British, European or American Standards.

In fairness - There is plenty of fraud jewelry out there made in the States too. If Bad guys can make a dollar - they are going to try.

The other point is that this may be real! The reaction you are experiencing has been answered by me before so I shall pass you on to that link below:

You might also like to add this query to my blog at http://online-jewelry-appraisals.com/ as other may have had a similar problem. Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps...
