14K White Gold Chain Strength: Can it Handle a 36g Pendant?

Hi Steven:

I have a 14k white gold ball chain that weighs 46 grams and 26" long with each ball 5 mm round. Is this a strong and durable enough chain to wear everyday with a 36 gram pt950 dog tag pendant?
This is my favorite style chain and I would like to wear it with my pendant but the pendant is quite heavy and I'm afraid that my chain will break because each of the balls are only attached together with a small bar link.
I was thinking of purchasing the same style chain that is made of platinum for more durability. Would a Platinum ball chain be a better choice than 14k to wear with my pendant?

Hi Tom, In my opinion wearing a platinum pendant of this heft with the style of link incorporated in the ball chain is a risky affair and will cost you countless $$ in repair costs. Sure the same link ball chain would be a lot stronger. the best link for any heavy pendant is a curb link. Good luck. sounds like quite a piece.
