Understanding Cameo Markings: Gold Fill, Maker's Marks & Value

Question
I have just come into the possession of a cameo pendant/pin which says "1/20 12K G.F." which I believe means that it is 12 K gold fill.  It also has what I think is a maker's mark on it that I believe reads "cc".  How do I find out what that means?  And how do I find out how old it is and if it has any monetary value?
Thank you for your help.
Jeanne

Answer
Hello Jeanne and thank you for your inquiry. You are correct that your cameo is 12 karat gold filled. If the mark "cc" is on the cameo itself, it is probably the carver's mark if the cameo is shell. Since most shell cameo jewelry comes from Italy, it might be difficult to trace the carver. However, below is a link to a site that may be of some help to you. Just copy and paste it into your browser address field and hit enter :

Age is usually determined by the carving style but many of the styles are being reproduced. The value would be determined on several factors -  the type of cameo i.e. shell, gemstone, glass, size, subject, quality and rarity. If the "cc" is on the frame of your cameo, it is probably the maker of the frame or design. There is a book that may help entitled "Cameos A Pocket Guide" by Schiffer. It has wonderful pictures and descriptions as well as current prices. It may be in your public library or museum. It is also inexpensive to purchase and is available through amazon.com

Hope this helps and enjoy your cameo !
