Identifying a Solid Gold Initial Ring: Karat, Origin & Value

Question

antique marked solid g
Hi, Thank you so much for taking your time to consider my question.  I purchased a ring today that is marked (written on the band) SOLID GOLD.  It has a rosy tint to the gold and is a woman's initial "D" ring. The  "D" is in gold mounted on a black square (stone?). I have never seen this mark and would appreciate any info on what karat? origin? approximate age? or approximate value?  In other words, any info at all will be appreciated and Thank you again. Sincerely, Sherri

Answer
Hello Sherri and thank you for your inquiry. During the late 1800's the words "Solid Gold" were often used as a marking on heavy gold filled jewelry. It also appears you have an initial or signet style ring and it is probably mounted on black glass or possibly onyx. If you want to have it checked further, you would need to have it tested by a professional jeweler who can verify any gold content. Usually you can get a referral to someone who can do this through your local museum or antique shop/mall. Hope this helps and enjoy your ring !
