Cleaning & Faceting Gemstone Rough: A Beginner's Guide

Question
How do you clean gemstone rough?  Also, I have some very nice translucent emerald and ruby and would like to use in making jewelry.  I have seen these stones faceted in jewelry stores.  Since they are translucent should they be faceted?   I also would like to use some of them as beads, should they be faceted as well?

Since I have your attention....What is the best place to learn to facet?  I cannot find anyone who knows how to do it and I really am afraid to spend the money on the equipment in the event that I am no good at it!

Answer
Hi Kathy,

I clean it up on a diamond lap 180 mesh.  Translucent stones should be buff top cut or cabbed, however people do have them faceted it is up to the client.  Same for the beads.

buff top is like a cab only they have faceted pavilions same as regular faceted stones
