QuestionHello! I found a very beautiful and seemingly new necklace lying around in my mother's room ( She lets me wear her jewellery) It has an italy and 14kt mark on it as well as a 585 mark on the clasp. Is it real 14 carat gold?
And also, how come some gold is marked as 14kt and 14k? What is the difference?
AnswerTiffany, the marks are for 14 karat gold. Either 14k or 14kt or 585 are just fine and all mean the same thing. The numbers represent the amount of pure gold in the jewlery mix of metal to make 14k gold. (Actually the number could be 583 but countries have chosen to up it a little beyond exactly 14k.)
In the United Kingdom the word is spelled carat, with a c, while in the USA it is spelled karat, with a k. Carat also means the weight of gemstones.
Thanks for the question. Perhaps this chain should be put up, being gold. : )
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
