Identifying Your Antique Irish Tara Brooch: History & Value

Question
I have an old brooch that was my grandma's and potentially her mother's from Ireland.  There are two clovers that are made of a green stone and it's round with a pin type object through the middle.

The back is marked with S&C and then an Anchor, Lion, and what looks like a lowercase "n".

How would I find out the history of this object?

Thanks.

Answer
Hello Elizabeth and thank you for your inquiry. What you have sounds like a Tara brooch to me and you might find the following page of interest. Just click on the url or copy and paste the below into your browser address field and hit enter.

The markings are definitely British and you would need to identify it in a book of Registry marks - Jackson's Hallmarks is a good one. Your local library may have a copy. There are several SC initials listed in Birmingham - the hallmark tells you the assay location, maker and date.

Hope this helps and enjoy your brooch !
