Revive Your Star Ruby: Professional Polishing Advice

Question
I have a star ruby approx. 1/2" in diameter. It has lost its polish. It is quite dull and even has some tiny pitting. I wear the ring all the time even in the studio where I paint and work on manual projects.  Is there a way for me to polish this stone with my Dremel tool?

Answer
Hi,

No not really, Ruby is very hard to polish if you are not set up for it.
You need a flat lap I use an ultra lap charged with 14000 diamond powder and you need crystal lube to lube the lap. The stone would need to be re-cut to take out deep pits.  I would use a steel lap charged with 3000 mesh diamond powder for that.

I charge, 45.00 to do this plus postage.
