Identifying Rose-Shaped Gemstones: A Detailed Guide

Question
QUESTION: I have a very tiny "stone" shaped like a rose,1/2 ", mounted of sterling silver, mat dark blue.
I paid $ 30, for it 5 years ago but cannot remember what it is called...
In advance, thank you.  Nicole Ray.

ANSWER: Nicole, thanks for the question.

Unfortunately, there are many, many items and stones which might be used for a rose shaped gem. The first I think of is lapis lazuli, a nice blue stone from Afghanistan in better grades and in what is called "denim" lapis for a slightly faded version from Chile.  Click the link below and you will see a ring with two carved lapis roses.

Otherwise, a blue like you describe could be carved glass with a matt finish or a dyed stone of some sort.  Without seeing the stone it is impossible to tell you what it is.

Best Wishes.  God Bless and Peace.   Thomas.

QUESTION: Thank you for being so prompt.I wish I knew how to send a photo..
it is a natural stone, not exactly like a rose, definitely not carved, more like a small sand rose .  Deep dark blue like lapis but mostly mat.  Again, thank you.

Answer
Maybe someone you know can show you how-to with photos sometime. It does come in handy.  Nicole, I have gone over several stones in my mind which might have a rose-like shape and be blue color, including the selenite sand roses.  Those of course would not do for jewelry at all due to structure and delicacy..and color.  I have run into a brick wall on what it might be. Some forms of turquoise like materials such as chrysocolla and eilat stone are capable of the right color but I have not seen that shape. Could be your stone was an unusual pick from a lot of loose natural gems. Who knows. Wish I did.

Thanks for getting back. Again, God Bless to you and yours.  Thomas
