Gemstone Sizing for Ring Settings: A Guide

Question
I have allot of loose gems and I want to mount them in rings but I'm not sure on how to measure them for the right settings.I do own a I'm brass gauge to use if I knew how .please help !

Answer

Stone Shapes
David, give me a day and I will get a chart showing how to measure different shapes. If the gauge is the mystery, I will try to clear that up, too.  See you tomorrow.

God Bless and Peace.    Thomas.

David, I have attached a chart showing the places to take measures on most shapes of gemstones. The link below has a well illustrated explanation of how to use the brass gauge.  In most cases, you do not need to go to closer than 1/2mm.  Keep in mind the depth of a stone. A stone which is very deep on the bottom side(below the girdle or waist of the gem if faceted) will be more difficult to set into a standard mounting and you may need to get one a size larger to allow more depth and longer prongs. (The prongs would be bent in to adapt to the stone).

For stones in between standard available setting sizes, going to the larger size is usually better than going to the smaller size setting.  For bezels which are rims around the stone, a close fit is desired but too small will not work unless you can ream out the size to fit the stone.

Here is the link on using the brass gauge:

Now, I will go see if the site allows me to add an attachment of stone shapes.
Best wishes with it all.  God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
