Gem Replacement for Necklace: What You Need to Know

Question
Hi, I have a necklace with 5 mystic fire topaz gems in it. I have lost one of the gems from the necklace and was wondering if I could take this to a jewelry store and could get the gem replaced. It was a gift and therefore I have no receipt or place of purchase information. Anything you can tell me would be great. Thanks for your time.

Answer
Erica, there should be little if any problem getting the stone replaced. First, to save wasted driving, call a few jewelry stores and ask if they do jewelry repair and replace stones. Ask if they do the work there or send it out.  You will likely do better and have better service with a store with the work being done there. You see, that means a bench jeweler who does the work is at the store and there will be a better knowledge overall of what must be done.

Stores can order you a new mystic topaz.  It is important they see your necklace to get sizes and see if added work is needed. Also, mystic topaz is available in more than one sort of coloration. They need to see the stones to try and match a new one as close as possible.

The store should look at the necklace and try to see if there is any damage to the setting where the stone was lost.  If the stone just fell out or was bumped out and the necklace is ok, that is the easiest repair replacement. If a part of the setting is broken, then they will give you an estimate for the repair.  All in all, you will get an estimate and it is then up to you do have the stone replaced or not. Fair enough?

Best wishes in all of this. God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
