Opal Repolishing: Restoring Brilliance to Your Vintage Gem

Question

opal.jpg
This vintage opal would undoubtedly have more fire with a better polish. Is that something that you do? What is the process? Approximate cost?

Answer
Hi Pat and Happy New Year,
Im quite sure I replied to you regarding where you can find out about who can re polish this for you . Anyway ,seems you may have not received it . My appologies.Yes it can be re polished its not a big deal, any lapidary can do it. The stone does'nt require taking out of the setting. The polishing is a 2 or three step job, 1. take out scratches with pumice wheel , then 2. repolish with Tin oxide .3. wash to remove  residues. I dont know where you are in USA but you should contact the  American Opal Society  in LA.CAL  http://www.opalsociety.org/  info@opalsociety.org they should be able to put you onto a lapidist near you . It should cost about $10 -15  for a re polish . I hope that helps best regards Rod Keady
