White Gold & Diamond Ring Discoloration: What Happened?
QuestionHi, I wore my engagement ring, which is yellow gold with a diamond set in white gold, when I went swimming. Some, but not all, of the "white gold" section has gone almost balck/ dark silver. Can white gold have this reaction or has the jeweller just encased the diamond in silver?
Your response would be most appreciated.

AnswerWithout actually seeing your ring it would be a strong educated guess that the white gold you are referring to is the "head" where the diamond is set, is that correct? usually all diamonds are set in white gold settings unless the ring is cast as one piece...in your case it is a separate head. The Chlorine in the water reacted with the white gold and turned the "head" blackish color. It needs to be polished out with tripoli and rouge at your local jeweler who has a shop on premise. It is an easy fix and nothing to be alarmed about. The alloy in the white gold head reacted with the chemicals in the pool.
all the best
