QuestionIn the late 1960's I received as a gift a ring from Caribe Diamonds. (Shipped by my now ex-husband who was in Viet Nam.) The stone is marquis cut, about 12X6mm, set in 14K white gold with an accent diamond on either side. Info that came with it claimed it was a "natural" stone, with "genuine diamonds". I have of course lost the paperwork many years ago.
My dilemma is this. I don't believe for a second that this is a natural alexandrite. I don't have that kind of luck. But the ring does have some sentimental value, and I'd like to have it reset. The stone appears to have a small crack or flaw in it. (it's hard to see without a loupe) and since I have no idea where it sits on the MOHS scale, I'm afraid that resetting it may cause it to crack worse or shatter. Do you have any idea, given the time and place of its origin, what this stone is likely to be? The saturation of color is moderate, and it changes from an almost fuschia to dull teal -- probably 70 to 80 percent color change.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
AnswerHello,
If you could send me a picture I could give you a better answer. It is unusual to be cut in a marquis shape. They are hard stones the synthetics are the same as ruby which is very hard natural alex is not quite as hard around 8.5.
Hope this is of help to you.
Regards,
Steven
