Is It Real Alexandrite? Identifying Genuine Gemstones

Question

Stones
I purchased some stones from a local jeweler that is supposed to be Alexandrite.  It is a green like peridot, but with more blue in it. Under the flame of a lighter in a dark room the stones have a very slightly purple color.  However at the store they were using a hand held UV light to show the change from green to a reddish orange.  Do you think the stones are Alexandrite?  I paid $120/ carat for a .33ct stone.

Answer
Hello,

There are a lot of stones out there that change color under different light.  The only sure way is to have it tested by a gemologist.  Some jewelers these days have them on staff.  I would call around and get it tested.
