Understanding Culet & Girdle in Gemstones: Setting Solutions

Question
What is the cu let of a stone and what is the thickness in the middle of the stone called?  I have a 8x6 stone to set but the settings won't fit as it will not fit into the setting as it is too thick in the middle--What do I do for a setting--what size??

Answer
Hello,

The culet is small facet on the bottom of a stone (sharp tip)  of a faceted stone the middle is called the girdle.  If there is no facet then it is called a closed culet.

You could have a jeweler make a custom setting or have the stone re-faceted to fit.
