Cloudy Citrine Ring: Restoration & Value Assessment

Question
I have a citrine stone ring which was purchased in europe by my mother - yellow in colour - oval in shape about just over 1 cm wide and almost 2 cm long.  Set in 14K Gold - On the flip side of the ring (bottom) there is a flower and leaf etching which when you look at the ring from the top you see the beauty of the flower. Enjoyed it for many years.  Now I just noticed that the whole top of the stone has gone cloudy and you can't see anything anymore.... I'm so upset - I'm thinking it came in contact with some chemicals like hairspray and has become damanges.  My question is can this be fixed/buffed???  I'm in Toronto Ontario and trying to find a jeweller who knows how to fix it is almost impossible - Can you give some clarity on what can be done.

Answer
Hi Maria,

It seems that something drastic has happened to the stone. Citrine which is Quartz is usually not effected by common chemicals. Was the gold effected at all? If the stone has been damaged it can easily be replaced, they aren't expensive and probably cheaper than repolishing the stone. It can be repolished if you really want it to be the same stone. You need to find out what caused this so you don't do it again. I find it hard to believe that there is no one in Toronto that can fix this. Find an AGS (American Gem Society) store or and FGA or GIA Gemologist and talk to them, if they can't help contact me again. Thanks for asking,

Peter
