Replacing a Cracked Opal Ring: Material Options & Repair Advice

Question
Hello
I have a modern opal and diamond ring, the opal being the main stone. I've been a bit rough with it to be honest so the opal is now cracked and chipped, definitely needs replacing.  Its cut in an unusual rounded triangle shape so I'd say could only be replaced with a similar inlay material.  My query to you is,
1. should I try to have the opal replaced with a harder wearing stone (for instance would something like lapis lazuli be suitable)
and
2. would this repair be very expensive (would it be worth doing?)

many thanks
Gill

Answer
Hi,

I would say it is a matter of what you like best.  As far as wear and tear the lapis is not too much better.  The cost is not too bad either unless your opal is super high grade.  They can be a little costly.  I would need to know the size of the stone aprox. Lapis is not very costly.
