Stone Setting Size Compatibility: Can a Slightly Smaller Stone Fit?

Question
If I have a setting that is 20x20mm can a stone that measures 18.8x18.2 mm be set into that setting? Is there any leeway in the measurements? for example a stone can be + or - 2mm and still be set into the casting or does it have to be exactly 20mm to fit?

Answer
Dear Patty,

So much as to whether a stone will fit a setting depends on the type of setting. Next, it depends on the skill of the jeweler to slightly modify the setting if possible.

A setting with prongs which taper out from a smaller bottom will likely work since the stone can be set slightly lower or the prongs can be moved in or out a little as needed.  If the setting is a bezel and fairly heavy, there will be a gap for a smaller stone and I cannot tell without seeing the sort of bezel. Can the bezel be bent in neatly to make up for about 0.5 mm on two sides and about 0.9 mm on each of the other sides? If so, the stone will fit if there is support for the stone bottom.

Generally, I would rather have a cast setting which is on the smaller side with enough allowance in design to let me grind out the insides to take the slightly larger stone.

I wish there was a set rule but depending on the care in manufacture, bought settings can be off a little bit and even the correct size stone may require slight adjustment in the setting. Settings from one maker to another can vary in tolerance.

Is there any way to contact the seller and ask if the slightly smaller stone will fit?  If not, perhaps they have something in 18 x 18 that would work but this is an odd size and likely not available.

A tolerance of 2mm is a lot and most settings will not allow that much difference in setting size and stone size.  Prong settings with bendable prongs to move out or in are the exception.

Patty, I do hope this helps a bit.  God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
