QuestionMy boyfriend and I just bought very cool steel Irish clatter rings, knowing nothing about steel. I take a size 5 1/4 and could only get a 6 to match his, the jeweler said she cant adjust the size as steel cannot be sauteed. Is there a way to permanently make it smaller?
AnswerKelley, steel is not properly sized using a jeweler's torch.
The only reasonable way I know to size the ring in a permanent manner is to find a jeweler with a jewelry laser welder. Since the equipment is very costly, most jewelers will not have it. If you cannot find a jeweler with a laser welder, ask stores if they have access to a trade shop with a laser welder. Trade shops do their business by doing jewelry work for retail jewelers and because of the higher volume of work will much more often have a laser than a single retail jewelers.
I am not yet "officially" trained with a laser but have used one on steel. It does work and with an experienced operator, I believe the ring may be sized permanently. Be prepared to pay a higher price because of the extra complications of the work.
I hope this helps. God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
