Identifying a Vintage Ring with 'NW' Marking - Possible Engagement Ring?

Question
My Grandmother passed away about 15 years ago and I was given one of her rings.  It looks like it could be an engagement ring, but my Mother said my Grandfather gave it to her sometime in the 80's.  I am trying to find out more about the ring, but don't know where to start.  There is a marking "NW" inside the ring (or I guess it could be "MN").  Do you know if this means anything?  It is definately not her initials.

Thank you!!

Answer
Hello Dana and thank you for your inquiry. These initials inside the ring could be the designer/manufacturer, but you would need more information in order to do a search. Is the ring gold or sterling ? any karat markings inside ? stones ? If you can positively id the letters, that might help if they are inside any type of icon i.e. shield, circle, etc. Some companies specialized in only gold or silver and others costume so knowing whether your ring is "precious metal" or costume would make the identification easier. A jeweler should be able to tell you if it is not marked. They use a simple acid test which does not harm the ring but should only be done by a professional. Hope this has helped and good luck.
