Identifying Antique Silver Ring Markings: GLM, Anchor, Lion & R
Question
sapphire/diamond ring?
Hi there, I have a very small ring with 3 oval shaped oblong stones(possibly sapphires), with 8 small clear(or diamond) stones. The ring is silver-coloured but stamped inside with GLM, then a small anchor, then a lion and then a R.What do these symbols and letters denote?
AnswerHi Sophie,
The ring is obviously made in the UK, the stampings are: GLM is the makers mark (the Manufacturer), the anchor is for "Birmingham" which is the assay mark and the lion is for "Sterling Silver" the purity mark. The stones are note designated by any marks in the ring shank. There is no way to identify them from a photo, I would have to see them in person. Diamonds have usually not been set in silver until recently with the steep rise in gold prices. You would need to have a gemologist identify them.
