Why is My Silver Ring Tarnishing & Losing Sparkle? - Sapphire & Diamond Care
QuestionI recently received a Sterling Silver ring with 3 sapphires and 3 diamonds just a few days ago and this morning i went to clean it like i always do because everyone knows silver tarnishes like crazy and it came out of the cleaner just fine. I wiped it off it looked good a little while later after doing dishes and washing my hands the silver was a feint brassy color and the diamonds and saphs were cloudy. I again immediately cleaned it. it restored the gems and most of the silver but in places it still has a brassy tone. Any idea what would cause this?
AnswerHi,
It depends on what the chemistry of your cleaner is. It sounds like their was a chemical reaction between the cleaner and the water of your dishes. It sounds like what ever it is it caused the silver to oxidize. Chlorine, Hydrogen peroxide, vinager, salt and sulfur are examples of chemistry I am guess would attack your ring. Take it to a jeweler and have them clean it up for you. Most offer this as a free service.
Good luck,
