Decoding 18k Gold Markings on Your Ring: Is It a Real Diamond?

Question
I have inherited a ring. It appears to be a diamond. I base that on the way it's set in the ring and the sparkle of the stone. (I haven't had time to take it to anyone to verify) but the band has a marking of 18khgf. What does that mean? Also, in your opinion, could it still be a real diamond even if it's in a gold filled band?

Thanks for your help, Denise

Answer
Without seeing the ring first and it is hard to say I recommend that you bring it into a jewelry shop and show the Goldsmith...
and actually he should be able to tell you if it's a real diamond but I would be careful..
if they indicates that it is a real diamond I would be very careful I would like to keep it in my sight at all times I certainly wouldn't leave it anywhere overnight because it could be switched..
go to a reputable jeweler and see if they can tell you on the spot is no reason why they can't..
HGF may be the designer or the Goldsmith
