Authenticating a Georgian Ring: Tips & Identification

Question

Ring
Hi,
I recently acquired this ring.  It is supposedly Georgian and from the late 1700s/early 1800s.  My question is - how can I tell if this is truly a Georgian ring (vs. a reproduction)?  It isn't hallmarked which had me a bit concerned but it seems that not everything from that period was marked (especially if the maker could escape paying a duty).  Also,  it is 15 kt gold (from what I read online, 18 kt was more common at that time.)  I tried looking at the hinge to see if that seemed original, but I'm not sure what to look for.  I've got more pictures I can provide if that helps.
Thanks

Answer
Hello Faye and thank you for your inquiry. Your ring is called a Claddagh ring and is Irish in tradition as a token of love. There are many different styles but all designed around clasped hands. The design is popular therefore many companies have reproduced it. Since your ring is not marked, you should have it tested for gold. Most British and foreign makers were required to assay mark their jewelry. I've listed a site below that can give you more historical information on the ring and maybe help with your research.  Just click on the link or copy and paste into your browser address field and hit enter:
