Reglan Side Effects & Pregnancy: A Patient's Experience

Question
Hi,

I am desperately trying to seek some answers about an incident I had with Reglan last week.  I was 7 weeks pregnant at the time, and my OB prescribed Reglan due to intense nausea.  I took 4 of the Reglans over a two-day period and the final pill caused me to lose control of my facial muscles (tongue uncontrollable, face pulled down to the right, could not speak properly at all - like stroke face).  This lasted four about 3-4 hours, so by the time I was heading to the hospital, it was beginning to wear off.

My question is, will this side effect affect the fetus at all?  I am terribly worried and scared.

I have also had problems with asthma and have had three nebulizer treatments over the past two weeks (albuterol) and was concerned about fetal risk there, too.  I've had two doctors assure me there is no risk, but would like another opinion.  I am on emoxicillin as well due to a sinus infection.

Basically, I've been one sick lady for the past two weeks and I'm terrified of the reaction this may have on the fetus.  I'm hoping someone can calm my fears, but of course, want a completely honest answer.

Thank you very much in advance for any information you may have.

Answer
YOu evidently had a type of Bell's Palsy that resolved. This is not uncommon during pregnancy and I do not believe it was caused by the REglan. Reglan has been used for many years in the treatment of nausea during pregnancy. There should be no effect on the pregnancy or on the baby from the neurological episode that you had at seven weeks gestation. Your treatment of your asthma will, likewise, cause no effects on the baby, even if you have to use steriods to control an acute attack. There are many patients who are asthmatics and are on asthma medication during pregnancy. The babies do fine. Don't worry.
