Irregular Periods & High Testosterone: Understanding Your Cycle

Question
I'll start from the very beginning. I started my monthly cycle at the age of 10. They started normal for the 1st few months and eventually went to every 3 months, every 6 months, and finally it just stopped. So in 7th grade i had an ultrasound everything was normal and i was told i was producing too much testosterone (if that's spelled correctly). Long story short in order for me to have a cycle I must take birth control pills or at least that's what i've always been prescribed. I've done research and i believe that i have all the classic symptoms of PCOS but i have never been told I had it but i've had a ER doctor ask me before because you always get the big question (when was your last menstrual?). So i'm not a pill taker but i took a set of ortho tri-cyclen in 01/2009 and had a normal cycle. I stop taking them and I mysteriously began to spot on my own on 6/16/2009 for 1 day and July 13-18 i had (what i believe was a cycle but it was very light only when I went to the bathroom and wiped myself. I took a pregnancy test on 7/19 and it was negative. i am actively trying to have a baby. After my July cycle I had sex on 7/22 and 7/24,and 7/25. How likely is it that women in my condition can conceive naturally. I have an appointment with my doctor in Aug to see what the next step is. Also if it helps i'm only 25 y/o.

Answer
Dear Kenya,

Unfortunately, for women in your situation it can be a difficult and frustrating process trying to conceive. However...NOT impossible. You are taking the correct steps in seeking the advice of your physician, and depending upon his/her expertise, they may refer you on to a fertility specialist. Until that time, I usually try to suggest having sex every 2-3 days. This allows you to catch any ovulations variances and also gives your partner's body time to rebuild his sperm stores.

I hope this has helped you in some small way and I wish you the best of luck in the future. Don't give up!
