Early Pregnancy Concerns: Spotting, Cramping & hCG Levels - Medical Review
Question30 year old mother of a 2 year old girl. Severe stomach pains 23/5/06 and pale red spotting. Pains lasted 30 mins then subsided into general period like ache for 24 hrs. Positive pregnancy test 24/5/06. Ultasound scan showed nothing on 25/5/06, no evidence of baby or mass/fluid to indicate loss. HGC levels 1100. 40 hours later HGC levels only 1175. 28/5/06 severe stomach cramps back, lasting 1 hour, very similar to last time, spotting again today also had some the day before. Very worried about miscarriage/ectopic. Does all of this mean I have definately lost the baby? I'm very unsure of my dates as came off the pill 3 months ago and haven't had normal periods since, thought was having a period 23/4/06 - 9/5/06 (on and off) but looking back was only very light bleeding, similar to spotting I'm having now. Before this think my last proper period was middle of March. Sorry I can't be more specific with dates. I'm supposed to be going on holiday to Greece on 7/6/06, do you think it would be advisable to cancel? Many thanks in advance for your help.
AnswerYou should try to keep a record of the first day of each of your periods. If you think your last period started in tbhe middle of March (March 15), the earliest you could have ovulated would have been on March 28 and you could have cnceived if you had sex on march 27,28,29, or 30. The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your nextt period. You were due for your next period on April 11. Therefore, a pregnancy test would be accurate after April 18. Your pregnancy test was positive on Mauy 24, so you were pregnant. On On May 25, you were 10 weeks and you should have seen a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. Since you did not see a baby, your period may have stated later than March 15 and you may have ovulated later. I would repeat a sonogram in two weeks. If there is no sign of a baby in two weeks, I fear it was a miscarriage.
