Is Early Pregnancy Possible? Signs, Tests, and Next Steps

Question
I have been on the pill for years and never gotten pregnant. Last month, I was on antibiotics for the 10 days prior to when my period should have started. My period was extremely light (very unusual for me) only spotting after going to the bathroom. While on antibiotics, we used a condom. In addition, we have been using a condom even since I was on the antibiotics. I have taken numerous pregnancy tests (all EPT brand and all first thing in the morning) and have figured out that the last time I could have gotten pregnant (sex while on the pill but no condom...this was 5 days before the antibiotic treatment started) was 38 days ago. All of the tests have been negative. My next period is not due until 7 days from now. Should the test be positive because I would have to be over 5 weeks pregnant even though I didn't completely miss my last period? All of the home pregnancy tests say to wait until your missed period (or 4 days before) but I feel like the test should be positive by this point if I am pregnant...how confusing!

Thank You!

Answer
Hi Diane,

The test should be positive by now, however depending on your hormone levels, the test may not be able to detect it. Sometimes antibiotics can effect your period, therefore making it lighter. If you feel you may still be pregnant, keep testing or go to your doctor for a blood test. If you aren't pregnant then it most likely was the antibiotics effecting your period.
