Cycle Restart After D&C: Clomid & Delayed Period - Symptoms & Concerns

Question
I had a D&C on July 2nd, 2009 due to a blighted ovum, I was almost 10 weeks.  I had bleeding off and on till Aug 11.  My gyn put me on 50mg of Clomid Aug13.  If my cycles had resumed normal I should have had a period on or around Sept 1.  It is now Sept 8.  I had very light spotting on Aug 23 and again on Aug 29.  Not even enough for a panty liner.  And again today I have had some very light spotting same as the other days, but no sign of my period coming.  I took a HPT today and it was negative.  Is this normal? If I am not pregnant when can I possibly expect my cycle.  My husband and I really want to concieve again before he leaves for Iraq in Nov. I have never had problems getting pregnant and this was my first miscarriage, I have 2 healthy older children. My gyn doesn't seem concerened but it just doesn't seem right to me. Any ideas or advice?

Answer
Dear Amanda

The incidence of sporadic abortion varies between 10-15% in normal healthy women. Therefore this is something you should not worry about especially coz you had 2 normal previous pregnancies.

You started your clomid on August 13 and usually you can expect your period 20 days after stopping your clomid. If you have not experienced your period and you are not pregnant 35-40 days after the last dose of the drug, your gyn may need to double your clomid dose aiming at inducing ovulation and subsequent menstruation. Many, in fact most, women, do not respond adequately to 50 mg dose of clomid.

Lastly, I have a question for you. You had a D & C for a blighted ovum which is an abnormal type of pregnany and this indirectly, means that you are ovulating. Why your doctor put you on clomid, which is an ovulation inducing drug? to hasten your chances of getting pregnant??. In fact, if this is the reason, i totally advise againt such technique.

Good Luck to you and best of luck in your future pregnancy.
