Ovarian Cyst & Uterine Lining Changes After Starting Birth Control: What to Expect

Question
I am the same one that had the cyst on ovary and what they think is a polyp with thickened uterine lining.  I started Ortho cyclen lo 18 days ago. Had the sonogram like you suggested 5 days after period and lining was already 8.8 mm.  After that sonogram I spotted and have spotted every day since. Also, since I started taking the pill I feel as though my uterus is heavy or swollen like I usually do the first day of my period.  Is this due to starting birth control?

I am 39.  4 pregnacies (2 births) 10 year old and 1 1/2 year old. Had D & E in 99, D & C 2003 and birth in 2004.

Answer
If a uterine polyp is suspected, a sono-hysteroscopy will confirm its presence. Sometimes, use of birth control pills will decrease ovarian cysts. After your period, the lining of the uterus (endometrium) will grow again, and a width of 8.8mm is normal. Often, after starting the pill, you can have breakthough bleeding for the first three months of taking the pill.
