Post-Urination Pain: Causes, Relief & When to See a Doctor
QuestionHello, I had to hold my water for about a 1/2 hour at my college graduation yesterday, it wasn't an urgent hold, I didn't have to make a mad dash to the bathroom after grad was over. However, after I urinated about 15 - 20 minutes later I was in severe pain. I had to pull over from driving and had my sister drive while I sat in the back trying to stretch out. I have had mild pain before, after holding my water for a very long time but this time I though I was going to go straight to the hospital after my graduation. I couldn't do that to my family so I went home, took 2 ibuprofen, laid down for 10 minutes and quickly recovered. Is this an infection? I am not sure to see my medical doc, obgyn or an urologist?? Thank you for your time.
AnswerDear Sharon,
It may have simply been some bladder spasms related to the bladder being stretched for an extended amount of time. However, in order to make sure that you do not have an infection going on, you can simply stop into your doctor's office and tell them you need to give them a urine sample to determine whether you have a urinary tract infection. It is as easy as that. Make sure not to drink too much beforehand, as you don't want the urine to be too dilute. Running the sample will give a quick answer as to whether or not you have an infection going on and your doctor will then be able to order you an antibiotic if needed.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
