Post-Miscarriage Bleeding & Cramps: What Could It Be?

Question
QUESTION: I recently wrote to you and thank you for your quick answer.  So, now I have yet another question I hope you can help me with.  It has been 4 1/2 weeks since my miscarriage, I stopped spotting about 1 1/2 weeks ago, but today I started to have cramps, and a small amount of red spotting.  I have also felt somewhat bloated.  Could this be the start of a period, or something caused by hormones? I don't really know what to think.

ANSWER: Hi Mariette
If you're regular with your periods and you normally experience cramps with bloating then it could well be your body getting into synch again! I'm very regular and mine started the next month to the day that the miscarriage started.

Don't be suprised if your periods are slightly different in flow and consistency for a while. That will settle down.

I know it's upsetting and all you want to do is get back to normal as quickly as possible. Please give yourself time. Allow 3months before you start trying again so your body can get back to normal, there is a higher risk of miscarriage if you try too soon after a previous miscarriage.

Let me know how things go!

Take care

QUESTION: I have always been very regular and never really had any cramping or bloating, never really any pms symptoms at all.  How differnt can cycles be.  After I wrote to you last night I had terribel cramps and a lot of bleeding with  pretty big clots, about silver dollar size.  That lasted for a couple of hours and today I haven't had hardly any bleeding at all mostly just spotting after I go to the the bathroom.  If it isn't a period why would I have completely stopped spotting and everything for about a week and a half and then have problems again.  As much as I want to get back to normal I hate not knowing what is happening to my body.
Thanks again.

Answer
Hi Mariette
I was the same when I had my first period after the miscarriage. In fact, I was convinced I'd HAD another miscarriage it was that bad. I'd say it does sound like a period and some women experience cramps after having a miscarriage, even if they hadn't had them at all before.

I know it's awful not knowing what's happening, so it may well be worth a trip to your GP to make sure all the tissue was removed. I can only relay my experience and knowledge, so I think for your peace of mind further investigation is required by a medical practitioner.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
