QuestionHi Christine... Thanks for reviewing my question. I had a miscarriage on September 10th. I did not have the D&C and experienced very intense pain and heavy bleeding but it really only last a day or 2 before tapering off.
I started my first period since the miscarriageon October 9th. The bleeding I experienced at that time seemed worse than during my miscarriage and had a lot of clots. At one point I had just put a tampon in maybe 15 minutes earlier and suddenly I had blood running down my legs. This was over after only a couple of days, but then I started bleeding again this past Tuesday, the 20th. I had just a little bleeding that evening and put a tampon in before going to bed. When I woke up and changed it I noticed there was not a lot of blood. I put a new one in and then suddenly had the very heavy bleeding. It wasn' 5 minutes later before I started bleeding through again and passing a lot of clots. It lasted only 30-60 minutes and after that I was fine with very little bleeding.
Is this normal??
AnswerSabrina,
I am very sorry to read about your miscarriage.
Having a miscarriage can really impact your monthly cycle, it throws the body completely off track, and in some cases it can take months for some level of normality to resume. You said you had intense pain around the time of the miscarriage, but you dont mention experiencing pain during this month. If you are having pain that is moderate or more uncomfortable than you can tolerate and it effects day to day things then I would advise you go straight back to your doctor to make sure that the miscarriage was complete. If you are not experiencing much pain, just this heavy bleeding then I would be more inclined to try and tolerate it for another few weeks, unless things get worse, but if it does not improve then I would go back to your doctor, again to make sure that everything was complete with the miscarriage.
Many women find that after 3 months the body begins to recover from the miscarriage and start to have more regular, lighter periods. I think the key to assessing when you need to go back to the doctor is 'can you put up with it?'. If it gets to a point where you think no, this is too heavy or too painful then go back to your doctor. Also, if after 3 months you are not seeing improvement it is always advisable to be assessed.
I hope that your body soon settles down for you to help you move on from this experience.
Kind regards,
Christine
