I am 26 years old.  I have 2 children.  I believe the first day of my last period was August 22.

My husband and I have decided that we want to start trying for another baby.  I was on the pill for 2 weeks before we decided.  I stopped taking the pill mid cycle and started to bleed on August 22.  Seemed like a normal period to me, cramps, blood flow, etc.  On Wednesday of this week when I started to feel kind of bloated (unusual for me) and a little crampy off an on.  When I went to the restroom there was a brownish discharge when I wiped but not enough to show anything in my underwear.  On Thursday, still felt the same but the discharge was pinkish and turned to brownish.  This morning when I woke up I thought I had started my period (blood in my underwear).  I put in a tampon, when I changed it a couple hours later there was very little blood.  I changed it again a couple hours later and there was no blood.  My menstral cycles on the pill or off always start off with heavy bleeding (change my tampon about every two hours due to heavy flow) so I am wondering if this could be implantation bleeding?

Answer -
When was the period you had before August 22? When was the exact day that you stopped the pill? If you stopped the pill after two weeks of taking it, you would normally start bleeding within a week after stopping the pill. That was not a period, but was a breakthrough bleeding due to stopping of the pill. If the bleeding that you had on August 22 was, indeed, a period, you would have ovulated on September 4. You could have only become pregnant if you had unprotected sex on September 3,4,5, or 6. If you did become pregnant on one of those days, implantation occurs around 8 days later (or around September 12). There is no way to know if the bleeding you had was implantation bleeding or not. You will have to see if you get your period on September 18. If you do not get your period on September 18, wait an additional seven days and take a pregnancy test on September 25 if your period has not started.

I continued to bleed heavier with cramping so I am assuming that this is actually my period and what happened on August 22nd was breakthrough bleeding from stopping the pill.  My husband and I did have unprotected sex on those days but if I did get pregnant I shouldn't have had my period correct?  Pretty sure that's what this is :(  We will continue to try this month but what would be the best days to try?  Also, is there any way to help predetermine the sex of your baby?  My husband is desparate for a boy, I just want another baby so if there is a way to increase the chances of having a boy I would love to know :)  Thank you so much!

Answer
If your period starts around September 18, the best time to try to conceive is on cycle days#13,14,15, or 16. That would be around September 30,October 1,2, or 3.  If you want to try for a boy, I refer you to Dr. Shettles article on "How to Choose the Sex of My Baby". It involves a bicarbonate douche at the time of intercourse and other hints. Good Luck.
