Possible Miscarriage? Symptoms & When to Seek Immediate Medical Care

Question
I am 25yrs old and was on birth control for like 9yrs and stopped taking the pill about a 2years ago.  My periods finally started getting normal about 6mo-1yr ago.  Well my problem and question now is I think I just had a miscarriage?!  Reason being is well now I'm not on any form of birth control and my new boyfriend and I have sex and he cums in me every time.  I haven't gotten pregnant yet, probably because I was on the pill for so long.  So anyway, went to doctor on Friday (because I ended my period the day before and I needed to get checked down there) and had my bloodwork done, pregnancy test taken the whole 9yards.  Get that morning after pill ya know (plan B) also I have taken this pill before in the past and it was normal, spotted a little that was it.  Well this time I take it I take it the Friday I get it and the other pill 12hrs later.  Okay so Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wed,Thurs all good.  Nothing no spotting nothing.  Well Friday comes then I start bleeding and still bleeding and it's now monday again. Still heavily, ALOT! I have to change my tampon still like every hour!  What's wrong with me? Did I have a miscarriage?  Should I go to Emergency room?

Answer
Hi Jenn
It is possible to be pregnant and have normal periods. However, I would say the chances are its not a miscarriage but maybe the effects of the morning after pill.
If you experience severe cramps and you're passing large clots I would seek medical attention ASAP. If you don't have any of those symtoms but the bleeding is still very heavy by Wednesday and/or you start to feel unwell, go see a medic just to rule out any other problems.

The pill can lighten your periods considerably, so it could be that you're just having a heavy month being as you're just getting back to normal after coming off the pill. My natural cycles are heavy but when on hormonal contraception, they almost disappeared!

My biggest concern is that you seem to need regular contraception and by using the morning after pill regularly, you're not planning to have a baby. It may be worth having a chat with your doctor or family planning clinic about the different methods. The morning after pill isn't always effective and the long term effects of regular usage isn't known.

If you're having unprotected sex there's always the risk that you'll get pregnant and its probably more chance than anything that you haven't so far.

Your health is so important, so do make sure you've got all angles covered!

Kindest Regards
Sarah.
