Heavy Bleeding After Birth Control & Potential Pregnancy Concerns

Question
Well I was on the pill for 4 years. Normal 28 day cycle..ect. Well when I started a new pack one month..about day 3 into the new pack I started bleeding sooooooo heavy..like gushing..like if I stood up in the shower it came out..anyways I had no cramps, so I stopped taking the bc thinking it was that. Well I bleed like that for 4 days non stop dark n heavy. There were a TON of blood clots. Well I had unprotected sex like a day after the bleeding stopped. I felt great. It didnt hurt ot anything..Well being I had got off my pills I had a doctor appt the next month to get on something new. Well when I went to my doct apt, I found out I was pregnant..they said it was very very early..and when he did the ultrasound he said I had a very large yolk sac...and sent me for more scans.. So im wondering if I had an identical twin in the sac and lost it but my other girl stayed alive...my doctor didnt really say much, just was glad my HG levels were going up

Answer
Hello Brie
An identical twin is when 1 egg is fertilised & splits in two, creating 2 embryos that share the same placenta. Non identical twins happen when 2 eggs are fertilised by 2 sperm, these don't share a placenta & can look different, even be two different sexes.

If you are carrying non-identical twins, its possible to miscarry 1 & have a full term pregnancy with the other. You will experience a normal miscarriage & pass the tissue.
With identical twins, a miscarriage would mean the loss of both babies. A loss of one would be in the form of 'disappearing twin' syndrome. This means you won't get the usual symptoms of a miscarriage, your body just re-absorbs the embryo once it has ceased to survive.

It's very possible that you have miscarried a non identical twin. Going by your dates though you should have seen an embryo on the scan, so another possibility is that you have had a loss or possibly a very heavy period & your pregnancy is from the unprotected sex.
Whatever the reason, a large yolk sac doesn't tend to be a good sign which is possibly why nothing much has been said.

The first 12wks are the most important & also the most unknown in pregnancy. All I can advise is to sit tight & wait for the scans & tests. The doctors probably haven't said much because they don't know themselves.

I hope this has helped you - please do come back if you have any more questions.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
