QuestionI had a miscarriage 3 weeks ago(October 6, 2008) and gone to ER. The Dr's told me that they didn't have to do DNC and gave me antibiotics. One Dr. told me to follow up with him after I finish the antibiotic in a week. After taking the antibiotic, I went to see the Dr. but then he was away for a week. I went to another clinic and I was scheduled for check up the next week(so that would be my second week after the miscarriage) The bleeding wasn't that bad, but then the pain in my abdominal and side of my stomach is worse. I went and was sent to an ultrasound on Oct. 22, 2008 and still doesn't have the result. They told me that they will call me if they get the result. They didn't give me any antibiotics or pain reliever coz they said I had no symptoms of infection. I am just taking Motrin(Ibuprofen) right now; however, doesn't really ease the pain I am having today. within the last 4 days I am badly having this stabbing pain in my abdominal area and sides of my stomach. I also suffer pain in those areas if I walk, laugh, cough, sniff hard, and lay down. Is this normal to feel after a natural miscarriage? I am not having any bleeding right now, just the stabbing pain. No foul smell, not a burn feeling when I pee, feeling too cold and sometimes too warm at night last 4 days, burning feeling on both eyes and a head ache. Do you have any idea what's happening with me?
AnswerHi Prescy.
Your aftercare sounds appauling! There has been no consistency & a serious lack of information. You must feel really confused!
Firstly, they have probably given you the tablets to prevent infection. They often do this if you have a d&c or are prone to infection.
Secondly, an ultrasound was carried out possibly to determine if you have any retained tissue. They should also look for the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy (where the foetus implants in the fallopian tube) but this isn't always visible via external scans. An ultrasound doesn't have 'results' persay. As they can see what's going on via the screen, they should have been able to tell you what's happening. It's possible that the sonographer has taken some pictures of your scan to be looked at by a specialist, but you should have heard about this by now.
It's normal to experience some slight cramping after miscarriage as the uterus shrinks back to normal, but I am concerned that you're in so much pain.
I would go back to see your doctor ASAP. There is a possibility that you have an ectopic pregnancy, especialy if you are unsure if you have passed the embryo. The sac is round & is almost like passing a golf ball or bigger (depending on how far along you are). It's easy to mistake a clot as the embryo & vice versa. They should have checked for this at the scan, but your symptoms sounds rather classic of this.
I do hope this has helped. In the meantime, if you experience any sudden & severe pain/bleeding, get yourself to the ER immediately.
Kindest Regards
