Delayed Period After Miscarriage: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
I had a miscarriage 6 weeks ago today (5/28/09) and still haven't gotten a period or any sort of spotting. I did not have a D&C but I have been intimate with my husband without any form of contraception. I took a preg test a few days ago and it came out negative. My question is, when will my period come back? or could I be pregnant again already and just be too early to know it?

Answer
Hi Desirae
I'm sorry to hear of your loss. It's normal for your cycles to be a little out of sorts after a miscarriage, it takes aprox 8wks for your periods to return and in some women even longer.

It is possible that you could be pregnant again. I would wait a week and take another test, if this is negative then it is a case of waiting until your cycles return.
Doctors usually recommend that you wait at least one period (ideally 3) before you start trying again. This allows you to work out due dates easier (to save going around in a circle of pregnancy testing) and reduces the chance of recurrent miscarriage.
It may be worth using a barrier method of contraception and waiting before trying again.

If you find that your periods haven't returned within 4 months of your miscarriage then pop along to your doctor. It may be that your system needs a kick-start and some doctors will prescribe some hormones to do so.

I do hope this has helped, if you have any further questions then please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
