Understanding Miscarriage: HCG Levels, Symptoms & When to Try Again

Question
I am adding on to my previous question I sent a little while ago. I forgot to mention that on 4/9 when I found out I was pregnant, my hcg levels were 118. The 1159 levels taken yesterday couldnt possibly add up. Not to mention, my pregnancy symptoms completely disappeared a few days before the spotting started. I just basically need closure to move on and try again. How soon can that be done? Is there a certain amount of cycles I should wait. I have such a guilt trip right now. Thinking that maybe the pregnancy could of stood a chance. Is it normal for me to feel this. Any suggestions on how to cope with this?

Answer
Dear Lena,

hCG levels have a very wide range of normal in early pregnancy. At 5 weeks, the normal range is 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml, so your level 2 weeks prior to the miscarriage could very well have been up to 3-4-5000. It would have started to drop when the pregnancy was lost.

Most all miscarriages cannot be prevented. The most common cause of miscarriage is chromosomal abnormality - meaning that something is not correct with the baby's chromosomes. Most chromosomal abnormalities are the cause of a faulty egg or sperm cell or are due to a problem at the time that the fertilized egg went through the division process. It is not something that you can avoid or prevent or do anything about. But, yes, almost all women who experience a miscarriage feel exactly what you are feeling. A loss is a loss - no matter when it occurs. Just know that the miscarriage was nature's own way of dealing with a problem with this pregnancy.

As far as getting pregnant again, the usual recommendation is to wait for 2-3 regular menstrual cycles to allow your body to heal and for your hormones to regulate again. Some women do get pregnant again right away, but allowing your body this healing time typically gives the next pregnancy the most ideal conditions and the the best chance for success.

Hope this has helped. Be well.
